Changes and challenges at the top of the world
A Star Tribune article published today includes an interview with Dr. Doering about the North of Sixty project. “Changes and Challenges at the Top of the World,” written by columnist John Rash, looks at cultural change in the Arctic and how programs such as North of Sixty are using new-media tools to capture and preserve traditional knowledge, language, and culture. North of Sixty is collaborating with schools around the circumpolar Arctic, in Russia, Norway, Canada, Finland, and the USA. These schools were provided with technology kits, training, and an online learning environment to scaffold students and teachers in the process of capturing, editing, and sharing video stories from their communities that weave together history, culture, and traditional ecological knowledge. The goal is to build a tapestry of Arctic voices.
